Online A2 CofC Drone Course (A2 Certificate of Competency)

This is an entirely ONLINE and Live WEBINAR / Virtual Classroom based course during the Covid-19, Coronavirus outbreak as authorised by the CAA.

The A2 CofC (A2 Certificate of Competency) is a new drone course qualification that is being introduced from the 31st December 2020 (postponed from 1st July 2020) to allow you to fly certain aircraft within a new set of regulation categories, regardless if you want to fly commercially or for a hobby.

The A2 subcategory will allow you to ‘fly closer to people’ if you hold an A2 Certificate of Competency (A2 CofC) in the UK and are flying a C2 class aircraft or if your aircraft is less than 2 kg MTOM (maximum take-off mass).

    How do Virtual Classrooms Work?

Simply select a date to book in for your LIVE webinar / virtual classroom 1/2 day theory course with an ICARUS Instructor and Examiner. Complete all of the pre-requisite E-Learning modules prior to logging in via a unique web link and you'll be taught the final modules by one of our examiners.

This is a completely unique course to help continue to deliver excellent training to you remotely during the Covid-19 outbreak.

The E-Learning will run from 1.00 pm - 4.00 pm (approx) with times for break between. You will be able to interact with your instructor via webcam at the end of each module.

    • You will need a web browser (Chrome is the preferred browser)
      • If you are using a tablet or mobile device an app may be required

All of our A2 CofC Drone course E-Learning is taught by industry expert and UAVHUB CEO Matt Williams (Mr MPW) who will guide you through the learning process that will ultimately lead to you becoming a certified drone operator in the A2 Subcategory of the Open Category.

How does the Online Examination Work?

When you have completed your 1/2 day virtual classroom course, you will be able to book in for your 'virtual closed book examination'.

You will book in a time slot to sit your examination online with one of our ICARUS examiners.

Before taking the examination, you will be required to show your examiner around your workspace using your webcam so they can ensure that you have no reading materials and notes to hand.

The Examination is multiple-choice and it will be invigilated by an Examiner throughout.

A Desktop or Laptop will be required to take the examination. You will not be able to take the examination using a Tablet device such as an iPad.

    Essential Equipment Required for Examination

    • Desktop or Laptop
    • Webcam
    • Microphone
    • Internet Connection with a minimum of 2Mbs speed

     What can I fly?

With an A2 CofC, you'll be able to fly a number of aircraft, as long as they are between a set weight threshold and this will depend on whether they are 'certified' drones or 'legacy' drones.

C2 Class Aircraft with an A2 CofC

You’ll be able to fly down to 30m of uninvolved people, or down to 5m if the aircraft has been switched to a low-speed mode with a C2 class aircraft.

C2 class aircraft need to have less than a 4 kg MTOM, be ‘safely made’ as determined by EU manufacturer standards, it needs noise limitations, a remote ID and a form of geo awareness.

It also needs a low-speed mode which limits the maximum speed of the aircraft to 3 m/s (approx 6.7 mph).

‘Legacy’ Aircraft with an A2 CofC

If your aircraft is between 250g and 500g MTOM (like the DJI Mavic Mini) then you will need to hold an A2 CofC and then you will be able to fly close to uninvolved people as long as you don’t overfly them. If your aircraft is between 500g and 2kg MTOM (like the DJI Mavic 2) then you will need to hold an A2 CofC and you will have to maintain a 50m separation distance from uninvolved people. You will be able to fly these ‘legacy’ aircraft under these permissions with an A2 CofC between 31st December 2020 and 1st January 2023. After this point, you will only be able to fly these aircraft in the A3 ‘far from people’ category which means you’ve got to stay 150m away from residential, industrial, business and recreational areas and a minimum of 50m from uninvolved people.
