What is the CAA A2 C of C Certification?

The A2 C of C (A2 Certificate of Competency) is a drone qualification that allows you to to fly small drones 'close to people' in congested areas. Under these new regulations, you can operate a drone commercially for the first time without needing to spend ££££'s on training and CAA Permissions!

The new A2 subcategory will allow you to ‘fly closer to people’ if you hold an A2 Certificate of Competency (A2 CofC) and are flying either a C2 class aircraft or if your drone weighs less than 2Kg; so it's the perfect qualification if you're flying drones like those in the DJI Mavic/Mavic 2 series and the Parrot Anafi.

You'll need to do an A2 C of C Training Course and Theory Examination with a CAA Approved Drone Training school like UAVHub to be able to get your A2 Certificate and take advantage of the amazing opportunities this new system offers for Drone Pilots who fly small drones!

What are the 5 SIMPLE steps to getting your A2 C of C with UAVHub?

I've completed the 'on-demand video learning', how does the Online Examination work?

When you have completed your 'on-demand video learning', you will be able to book in for your online A2 Theory Examination using a calendar system which is built-in to your Training Portal.

Using this link, you will be able to book your online examination at a time to suit you; including weekends and holidays!

We normally need a minimum of 24 hours notice from you booking to sitting your exam but this gives you time to complete the on-demand, video-based revision module and is a great opportunity to complete the mock examinations which we've included in your training, to make sure the Theory Examination is a breeze!

When it comes to taking your examination, you will be required to show your examiner around your workspace using your webcam so they can ensure that you have no reading materials and notes to hand.

The Examination is multiple-choice and it will be invigilated by an Examiner throughout.

Please note; a Desktop or Laptop computer with the Chrome Browser will be required to take the examination! You will not be able to take the examination using a tablet device such as an iPad and you will need to be able to move the camera so that the invigilator can see your entire room.

      Essential Equipment Required for Examination

      • Desktop or Laptop
      • Chrome Browser
      • Webcam
      • Microphone
      • Internet Connection with a minimum of 2Mbs speed

So, what can I fly with my A2 C of C Certificate?

With your A2 C of C, you'll be able to fly drones that weigh up to 4Kg.

      • 'Legacy' drones that don't carry a 'C2' marking on them (such as the DJI Mavic series, DJI Mavic 2 series, DJI Phantom Series and Parrot Anafi Series) can be flown under your A2 Certificate, provided they weigh less than 2Kg.
      • 'C2 Certified' drones (which carry an official 'C2 Stamp') can weigh up to 4Kg

What can you do with 'Legacy’ Drones once you've got your A2 C of C?

If your drone weighs between 250g and 2kg (like the DJI Mavic 2) then getting your A2 C of C will let you fly in built-up areas, so long as you stay 50 metres or more away from 'uninvolved people' (if the drone weighs between 500g & 2kg)

You will be able to fly your 'legacy' drones under these permissions with an A2 C of C between 31st December 2020 and 31st December 2022.

After this date, the rules change slightly and you will only be able to fly these aircraft outside built-up areas and you need to stay 150 metres or more away from congested areas & 50m from uninvolved people.

(Please note that a consultation is currently being led by the CAA to potentially EXTEND the legacy transition period beyond the 31st December 2022)

With the rate of technology advancement, it is anticipated that most people will have purchased a 'C2 Certified' drone by then which will be safer, more capable and can then be flown closer to people with your A2 certificate!

What can you do with 'C2 Class' Drones once you've completed your A2 C of C?

If you purchase a 'C2 Class Drone', when they come onto the market, you’ll be able to fly down to just 30m of uninvolved people, or down to 5m if the aircraft has been switched to a low-speed mode!

This is set to open up a whole new world of opportunities for drone pilots who have their A2 C of C and a C2 class drone. Imagine; you'll be able to inspect roofs, take photos of houses and potentially film with your drone in town centres! Something we could only have dreamed of being allowed to do with the BEST, SPECIAL permissions available from the CAA!
